I’ve been to Fresno plenty of times for sports tournaments or simply passing through on the way to California’s incredible national parks, but never to spend a weekend relaxing. That changed this past weekend when we discovered what might be one of the best river camping near Los Angeles.
While searching Hipcamp for camping with swimming holes, docks, and water access, one listing immediately caught my attention: a private riverside campsite with a dock, a diving board, and the kind of old-school summer vibes I’ve been chasing.
I’ve always been obsessed with those Midwest and Upstate New York summer scenes, you know the ones: a cozy cabin, a dock stretching into the water, kids swimming all day, and evenings around a campfire. California has plenty of beautiful lakes, but finding that classic “lake summer” feeling can be surprisingly difficult.
Maybe that nostalgia comes from my own childhood. As a pre-teen, I spent summers at Hye Camp, an Armenian summer camp tucked away in the Sierra Nevada. I remember days spent swimming in the Cheesh Pond, being outdoors from sunrise to sunset, and experiencing that simple magic of summer around water and nature.
This little spot on the Kings River brought me right back to that feeling, the kind of summer where kids are barefoot, the water is never far away, and the best memories are made outside.
Well… I think I finally found something pretty close.
A Toddler-Friendly Camping Trip Just 3 Hours from Los Angeles
My three-year-old son Diego has been begging to go camping, so we decided to kick off our summer camping season with this hidden gem just about three hours from Los Angeles.
Located near the small town of Laton outside of Tulare, this private property sits directly along the Kings River and offers a peaceful riverside escape that feels worlds away from Southern California.
Why We Loved This River Camping Spot
This campsite checked all the boxes for us:
- Private Kings River access
- A swimming area with a dock and diving board
- Plenty of shade (a must during California summers)
- A real bathroom (completely non-negotiable for me)
- A canoe available for guests to use
- Fire pit with plenty of complimentary firewood
- Refrigerator, sink station, and multiple picnic tables
- Friendly and thoughtful hosts
The property owner Dale has truly turned this stretch of river into a personal playground and was generous enough to share it with campers. The little touches, like the stocked firewood, outdoor kitchen amenities, and access to the canoe made the experience feel comfortable without taking away the camping experience.

The River: A Hidden Swimming Hole in California
The biggest highlight was, without a doubt, the river.
We brought our kayak and stand-up paddle board specifically because we wanted a river camping experience with easy water access. The Kings River does have a current, so we would paddle upstream first and then enjoy an easy float back downstream.
The scenery was surprisingly beautiful. It was wild to float through lush greenery knowing that just beyond the trees were thousands of acres of Central Valley farmland.
The beachfront area near the dock had little to no current, making it a perfect place to relax, splash around, and let our toddler safely play in the shallow water.
The dock and diving board gave the whole place a nostalgic summer-camp feel, exactly what I had been searching for.

Things to Know Before You Go
There are a few things to keep in mind before planning your trip.
The River Is Seasonal
The Kings River water levels depend heavily on snowfall and seasonal releases, meaning parts of the year the river can be completely dry. We visited when water levels were high, and there were jet skis and speed boats passing through. It was probably the only downside of our stay, but it wasn’t a deal breaker.
Bring Shoes You Don’t Care About
The campsite is surrounded by mulberry trees, and while they’re beautiful, the fallen berries will stain and stick to the bottoms of your shoes. Bring an old pair of sandals or sneakers that you don’t mind getting messy.
Final Thoughts: One of the Best River Camping Experiences Near Los Angeles
If you’re searching for river camping within three hours of Los Angeles, a toddler-friendly camping spot, or a California swimming hole with a dock, this place deserves a spot on your list.
Is it a perfect Upstate New York lake cottage? No. It’s Kings River camping!
But is it the closest I’ve found to that nostalgic summer feeling, jumping off a dock, paddling a canoe, floating down the river, and ending the night around a campfire?
Absolutely.
